Bell Street is a one-woman show run entirely by Ali Dibley, who does all the dressmaking, vintage sourcing, social media and website management. She sometimes talks about herself in the third person to make it sound as though she has staff…
Bell Street is a magical bridal store comprising of two components. BELL STREET BRIDAL + BORROW FROM BELL STREET

“I’m a 31 year old designer who grew up in country NSW and now calls Sydney home. I live in the Inner West with my husband, our two year old daughter Hermione and a very hairy rescue dog called Teddy. I love musicals, Disney, Harry Potter and anything sparkly.

I studied Fashion Design at UTS and graduated in 2010 with 1st class Honours and a couple of prizes that helped me start up my business – originally making crazy raincoats and colourful bags. I then did a Masters in Teaching at UWS to teach high school design & technology subjects.

I started working with bridal clients nine years ago and officially started the bridal business while living in the Philippines in 2013. Since returning to Sydney in 2014, I’ve been working with lots of lovely brides and bridesmaids to create their dream dresses. I finally signed the lease on my own shop in May 2018, when I started the other part of my business, Borrow from Bell Street”.

“This was one of my favourite weddings to work on. I LOVE a themed wedding. I also love that Desiree wanted a modern interpretation of the Star Wars aesthetic, rather than a cosplay wedding (although that would’ve been fun too!).

For the bridesmaids, we used the colour scheme and velvet trim of Padme Amidala’s handmaidens, designing different style dresses for each of the girls. Desiree wanted her dress inspired by the colours in Padme’s lake dress. I asked how she felt about sparkle and she was very enthusiastic, so I decided to embroider crystal constellations in gold thread all over the skirt”.

“Rachel wore a tea length ivory dress with a built in gold sequin capelet. We bonded over our mutual love of sequins and made most of the design decisions during fittings. It came together beautifully!”

“Laura wanted a vintage-inspired, lace trimmed dress with a polka dot bodice and tulle skirt. The skirt structure was created by layers of tulle petticoats and a band of polka dot-trimmed horsehair crinoline.”

Borrow from Bell STREET is the other part of Ali’s business where you can hire pieces from her amazing vintage and handmade collection. Borrow a gown or mix and match separates to create a one-of-a-kind look!

“Imagine you had a fairy godmother. A fun, fabulous, fashionable fairy godmother who spent her life collecting beautiful things. Imagine she said “Why don’t you rifle through my closet and borrow something?”
